Thomas G. Waites – Screen Acting Class

Often as actors we feel our Acting for Camera training at drama school was all to brief, especially for the majority of work that requires this skill. Though it is easy enough to grasp and execute the basics, the neat tricks and methods learned by experienced screen actors are invaluable to those trying to stand out or have that something extra in audition.

Date: 6th May

Start time: 6.30pm

Length: 2.5 hours

Screen acting on television and film varies considerably from stage and must be integral component in the craft of the actor.

In the theatre the audience—whether it be a house of fifty or five thousand must be adapted to, that is the actor must be cognizant of the audience as well as his fellow actors. On Film however, the camera becomes the audience. Where is the camera? How does one adapt to it? Does the concept of "larger or smaller" apply?  How do I approach the camera. How do I get it to fall in love with me?  Do I look at it ? Ever?  Do I still use it to aid and abet the action of the scene?

These and many other issues will be resolved in this On Camera seminar.  It will be an uplifting insight into the process whether your interest is Acting or Directing.

Thomas G. Waites – Method Acting Masterclass

There are many misconceptions of what Method Acting actually is. Some say they are method but miss the concept, some say they are not but use all the techniques! In this session Tom will explain his process as well as putting myths to bed and replacing with true history and functional facts.

Date: 13th May

Start time: 6.30pm

Length: 2.5 hours

A much misunderstood concept that allegedly originated in America. It did not. Method Acting was invented by Stanislavsky around the turn of the 20th Century.  Adopted by Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler and Uta Haagen, the Method is a much mis understood system. Stanislavsky's initial concept was to create a system that was comparable to a musician that warms up by practicing scales. What can an actor do to warm up?  How does one create a character?  Where does this, " System" apply to the work?

Objective vs Action.  Breaking down a script and applying the Method to creating a character. Using the play, Streetcar Named Desire By Tennessee Williams, we will take scenes break them down and apply the Method, and watch, see how it helps the actor to relax and concentrate on the task at hand: What do I want? In the scene. How (according to the character) do I get it.
