In 1920s Germany, Hannah Arendt, a young Jewish student catches the eye of professor Martin Heidegger, a brilliant mind and philosopher. Enchanted by her, the married teacher becomes her mentor and lover and they embark on a tumultuous love affair. But as the Nazis rise to power, Hannah flees to America and becomes a political writer. Heidegger, meanwhile, uses his fame and brilliance to further the goals of the party.
Against the backdrop of the Nuremberg War Trials, Hannah, on assignment for an American newspaper, returns to Germany to confront Heidegger about his involvement with the Nazis and to understand what he still means to her...
