"What's this? What's this? Is this her fault or mine?
The tempter, or the tempted, who sins most?"
The city's laws have fallen into disuse; depravity and loose living have become rife. Angelo, the puritanical deputy left in charge by the absent Duke, enforces strict laws against immorality; but when Isabella, a novice nun, comes to plead for her brother's life, Angelo is smitten with lust and offers her a "monstrous bargain" - a pardon for her brother in return for her virginity.
In this powerful and savage comedy, Shakespeare's themes of justice versus mercy, of sexual repression, hypocrisy and corruption in high places, raise issues which still resonate today.
