Ellida, the daughter of a lighthouse-keeper, is married to Dr Wangel. Full of longing for the sea, she feels claustrophobic and restless. On a late summer’s day a mysterious stranger comes to claim her, offering an escape from the stifling world she lives in. Now Ellida must decide whether to stay with the family she loves but to which she has never really belonged, or to answer the call of the sea.
In the latter years of the 19th century, Henrik Ibsen was quietly overseeing a revolution in the way theatre touched people’s lives. Rebelling against the predominant melodrama of the day and the ‘great hero’ narratives of the classics alike – his theatre viewed society through the lens of a much more melancholic, changeable and human truth.
