Written just after the end of WW1, the story is, on the face of it, a
simple one. But is it? I'll let the article from the Scotsman prior to
the Edinburgh revival in 2008 speak for it.
_Yet beneath _[the surface]_ there is the sense of a real event,
reflected upon but unspoken. The play's enduring appeal is its capacity
to place the supernatural beside the natural, using each to escape the
oppressive logic of modern times. Even death, Barrie seems to suggest,
can be defeated._
