James Walker wins Courtyard prize for new writing
24th June 2004Young playwright James Walker has won the Courtyard Theatre's King's Cross Award 2004 for New Writing with his play Proving Mr Jennings, which will now be staged at the venue with a budget of up to £20,000.
Walker, aged 24, beat five other shortlisted stories with his tale of a man who goes into hospital for a transplant, only to have the surgeons discover he has a bomb inside his head. The judges, who included former culture secretary Chris Smith, Stage contributor Aleks Sierz and artistic director of the Courtyard Theatre June Abbott, selected the comedy from 147 entries - an increase of 120 on last year's inaugural contest.Courtyard general manager Tim Gill said: "James' show was a satirical take on the current state of affairs and is extremely funny. I think it is going to do very well. As a production it will be a fantastic piece of theatre. He is a very promising talent."
Proving Mr Jennings will be produced at the Courtyard Theatre, directed by Guy Retallack and will premiere on August 31.
