Who We Are

The Courtyard Theatre is one of London's most vibrant new theatres. In the heart of Hoxton's thriving artistic scene, we strive to offer an exciting and varied programme that puts it at the forefront of British Theatre and keeps people coming back.

The Courtyard endeavors to discover the best new playwrights, directors and companies from a wide range of backgrounds, and promises to nurture, support and mentor them whilst their careers are in the early stages of development. We aim to discover cutting edge work and exciting new artists that tell stories in unique, original and innovative ways. We want to entertain and inspire as well as shock and provoke. From political theatre to live comdey, we want to champion it all.

What We Do

Once a year we hold a DEVELOPMENT SEASON that enables new companies and directors to showcase and develop their work. Companies and directors are given the theatre for one week at a considerably reduced and affordable rate which allows them to develop their work in front of an audience and show case their talent to the industry.

Our FILLING THE GAP scheme supports work already developed and out there. The Courtyard will find work we believe to be cutting edge and experimental and that is changing and challenging the shape of British theatre and will allow them to bring that show to the Courtyard free of charge for a limited run.

Each year the Courtyard puts on a PRE-EDINBURGH SEASON which provides an opportunity for artists to show their work and get valuable feedback before showing to critics and an international audience.

Education

The Courtyard provides an ambitious education and training programme. We provide many different opportunities within the theatre for those new to the industry, from admin opportunities to technical and creative roles, we provide placements and work experience all year round.

The Courtyard works with many different arts companies that offer further development, training and expertise to the industry from world class, respected contemporary and traditional practitioners.

We are also committed to bringing new, young directors, producers and writers together and supporting them and their work by giving them the opportunity to develop their relationships and work whilst providing an affordable platform for them to show it.

Community

The Courtyard is determined to engage with the local community. We want to encourage more of our local residents to make use of their local theatre and are therefore proud to present £7 Tuesdays where Hackney residents can come to the theatre for the price of a cinema ticket-so if you’re a local resident come and discover Tuesday’s at the Courtyard Theatre…

Awards

· Kings Cross Award

The Kings Cross Award for New Writing is now a national platform for emerging playwrights and plays. In this, its sixth year, the judging panel consist of industry professionals across all genres.
